Game:
The game is designed to teach users to recognize all 88 modern constellations, the brightest stars, and 110 Messier Objects through a series of levels. Levels are categorized by constellations, stars, and DSOs, and divided into regions (north, equator, south) and difficulties (easy, medium, hard). Each level focuses on a small number of objects and then tests your knowledge in a quiz format to aid memorization. Later levels also review and retest previously learned objects.
Levels:
In each level, you are first given an opportunity to see and memorize the objects (constellations, stars, or DSOs) in that level. Use the arrows to navigate through them and click 'Start' when you are ready. The description of each object is displayed on the panel at the bottom of the screen. You can expand the panel by dragging it up to view more details about the object. After clicking 'Start', an object will be shown and you will be presented with four options. The level ends when you answer a certain number of questions correctly (indicated in the top-left corner). At the end of the level, you will have an opportunity to review any mistakes before progressing further. Please note that in challenge levels, no hints are available and you have a limited number of lives to pass them.
Difficulties:
Each level is available in three difficulties: easy, medium, and hard.
- Easy levels show the lines of the constellations, providing a less realistic experience but serving as an initial learning step.
- Medium levels hide the lines of the constellations but show their precise borders and the lines of surrounding constellations to aid recognition.
- Hard levels are the closest to the real night sky. They only show the approximate location of the objects (without the exact shape or borders) and randomize the orientation each time to help you recognize the objects from different angles.
We recommend progressing through each difficulty, from easy to hard.
Explore Screen:
The explore screen (accessed by tapping the third button on the main screen) allows you to explore the sky on your own. Tapping on objects (such as star or constellation names) reveals more information about them, including their abbreviation, brightest star, area of the sky, distance, and more. You can also use a double-tap gesture to quickly hide/reveal all decorations. The search icon in the top-right corner allows you to quickly find specific objects you are interested in.
